Opening Files on Your Hard Drive

Updated on

As of April 2026, only the web-based versions of Office 365 apps are available to IAIA students. This article shows you how to open a file on your laptop's hard drive

Overview

In order to edit a file with Word Online--or other versions of Web-based apps--you must first upload the document to the app. Then you can work with the document normally. After editing, you can save the document to cloud storage, or save it back to the hard drive on your computer.

Visual Steps

Open the app you want to edit a file with. In this case, we'll use Word.

Your document file opens in Word Online, ready for editing.

In the next article, you'll learn how to save the edited document back to your hard drive.
