Canvas Required Password Change

Updated on

To enhance security, you may be asked to change your Canvas password. This article describes the password requirements and suggests a method to create an easy-to-remember password.

Password Requirements

IAIA Canvas will have just one requirement for new passwords:

  1. Passwords must be at least 16-characters long
    • Passwords can have any combination of words, special characters, capitals, and numbers
    • The use of special characters, capitals, and numbers is not required

Suggested Password Method

Create a password out of four random words you'll find easy to remember.
Don't worry about or feel the need to use special characters or numbers.

Research has shown that passwords which are longer and simpler are more effective/harder to hack.
See this XKCD Cartoon that explains this principle simply.

Examples: gout--sky--amoeba--crater     rose--taco--cloud--burrow

Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)

This is an authentication that uses a second method to ensure that only you can log in. This is set up separately from your Canvas user password. You can use text messaging or an authenticator app to set this up.

See the next article for steps to set up multi-factor authentication.
