Setting-up Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) in Canvas

Updated on

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) uses a second login method after the normal method. The most common MFA methods in wide use are below. You can use either one.

  • Text Messaging -- you are sent a code via text message, which you enter into the login screen.
  • Authenticator App -- you send a code generated by an authenticator app (e.g. Microsoft Authenticator)

Some Canvas users are required to use this stronger authentication method. For others it will be optional until a new round of security-strengthening measures are put into place.

How to Set Up MFA

After you sign into Canvas, use the following steps to begin setting-up MFA.

In the next sequence of steps, you can use either SMS (text messaging) or an Authenticator app.

If you choose to use an Authenticator, you can use any such app.
(You are not required to use the Microsoft Authenticator app you may already use for Microsoft Office 365.)

Follow the on-screen steps to complete the MFA setup.
